History

The Belfast Summer Relief Program (BSRP) began in 1975 when the late Thomas Harkin, a native of County Leitrim, visited his homeland with his wife, Martha. Saddened by seeing no children playing in the streets of Belfast due to security reasons, the couple decided to start a program to bring children from the strife-torn area to Western New York.Their goal was to provide the children with a carefree summer away from the political tension and enable them to gain an entirely new perspective.

Over the years, the all-volunteer program has brought more than 1600 children to Western New York. Every other summer, approximately 60 boys and girls-ages 10-12 years old-are selected through the school system in Northern Ireland. The group consists of equal numbers of Catholic and Protestant children.

The BSRP places the children with suitable host families for this six-week vacation in the Western New York area. The typical time frame is the last week of June through the end of the first week in August. It's preferred that the host family has a child or children in the 10-12 years old age range.

The BSRP provides airfare, ground transportation and insurance while the host families are asked to provide room and board along with some "tender, loving care." The number of children brought to WNY for the summer depends on the success of our fundraising efforts. We hope you will join us in this worthwhile peace-making effort.

The Program will be seeking host families for the summer of 2012. Interested families should contact Jack and Maureen at (716) 822-6626 or email: JandMFecio@aol.com. If you email, please include your phone number in your email.
